Letter sent in support of the New Woman Research Center

July 18, 2003

URGENT

Minister of Social Affairs and Insurance
Amina Muhammad El Guindi
Fax Number: + 20 2 3375390
E-mail : msi@idsc.gov.eg

Your Excellency:

We understand that the application of New Woman Research Center, Egypt to establish the New Woman Research Foundation has been rejected by the Egyptian Ministry of Social Affairs.

The New Woman Research Foundation (formerly the Center) made every effort to follow the regulations set by the new NGO Law 84/2002 and the requirements were met.

We were very disappointed to learn that this decision was based upon a letter from the Security Directorate of Giza informing the Ministry that "Security Authorities do not agree to the registration of the above mentioned institution." It appears that the rejection lacks a legal basis, and is intended to restrict the activities of Egyptian civil society.

The New Woman Research Center, a feminist NGO has engaged in efforts to promote women's human rights on local, national, regional and international levels for nearly two decades. The Center has made important contributions to the struggle to overcome all forms of discrimination against women as part of the wider struggle for social justice and democracy.

We believe that the Egyptian government likewise supports the human struggle for social justice and democracy but that the non-registration of this organization sends the opposite message to national and international observers.

We respectfully request that you consider reversing this decision and rectify the application of improper criteria to Law 84.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sherifa Zuhur
