Reception
Program. Guest speaker and specialist on modern Iranrian literature,
Dr. Farzaneh Milani, University of Virginia who will introduce, our
special guest, the writer, Ms. Goli Taraghi.
Goli Taraghi,
Iranian prize-winning short story writer and novelist, is the daughter
of an editor, publisher, and member of the Iranian Parliament. Zohreh
(Goli) Taraghi_Moghadam was born and raised in Tehran. She attended
college in the United States, returning to Iran with a degree in philosophy
in 1961. She obtained a master's degree from Tehran University in 1967.
During the 1960s Taraghi served as an international relations specialist
for the Plan Organization in Tehran and began publishing short stories,
first in Andisheh va honar in 1965.
Her collection
of short stories called Man ham Che Gevârâ hastam (I
too am Che Guevara) appeared in 1969. In 1973, she published
a novelistic collection of related narratives called Khâb_e
zemestâni (Hibernation), which Francine T. Mahak
has translated in a doctoral dissertation entitled "Goli Taraqqi's
A Winter Sleep: A Translation and Analysis" (University of Utah,
1986). A French translation of the novel appeared in Paris in 1986 under
the title Sommeil d'hiver.
In the 1970s
Taraghi was a lecturer in philosophy at Tehran University. Upon the
temporary closing of Iranian universities in 1980, and her divorce from
film director Hazhir Daryush, she emigrated to Paris with her two children.
She returned to Iran for brief visits during the 1980s. A translation
of Taraqqi's 1979 story called "Bozorg_bânu_ye ruh_e man"
(The great lady of my soul), first published in the short_lived
weekly Ketâb_e jom¹eh (1979_1980), appears in Iranian
Studies 15 (1982). Her mid_1980s short story "Dandân_e
talâ¹i_ye ¹Aziz qâ" (Aziz Aqa's
gold filling) appeared in an expatriate journal published in
California called Omid 3 (1988). In 1991, Taraqqi wrote a novel entitled
Adath`_ye gharib_e Aqa_ye Alef afar ghorbat (The strange
behavior of Mr. A. in exile).
