What is AMEWS?
THE
ASSOCIATION FOR MIDDLE EAST WOMEN'S STUDIES is an organization
of scholars and individuals with an interest in women of the Middle
East. It is an affiliated organization of the Middle East Studies
Association of North America, Inc. AMEWS was founded in 1985 by
scholars interested in promoting quality research in the field
of Middle East women's studies. To this end, AMEWS organizes conference
panels, and has co-sponsored symposia and an e-conference, Through
its triennial publication, The Journal of Middle East Women's
Studies (JMEWS) it advances the fields of Middle East women's
studies, gender studies, and Middle East studies through contributions
across disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Membership
in AMEWS is open to anyone with an interest in Middle East women's
studies.
Located at
the cutting edge of the new scholarship in Middle East women's
studies, JMEWS, encourages research using innovative, theoretical,
epistemological, and methodological approaches. It reflects the
explosion of knowledge production about Middle Eastern women and
gender over the past quarter century and publishes research informed
by transnational feminist studies, cultural studies, modern historical
studies, new forms of ethnography, and the emergent intersections
of science and philosophy. JMEWS provides a forum in which area-specific
questions can be discussed and debated among authors from the
global north and south, through scholarly articles, book and film
reviews, and other forms of communication.
JMEWS is
a benefit of membership of the Association for Middle East Women's
Studies. Membership
to AMEWS and to the JMEWS journal is through Indiana University
